Katherine worked as a Criminal Barrister in New Zealand for three years, defending clients in the District and High Courts of Auckland and representing clients on parole matters. She also worked as a solicitor in the areas of criminal, family and civil litigation. She was keenly involved in the Restorative Justice movement in New Zealand and in improving the rights of prisoners.
After relocating to the UK in 2008 she worked for children’s rights NGO's providing legal advice. She was a facilitator in The Sycamore Tree, a Restorative Justice and Victim Awareness programme at HMP Holloway.
Katherine then went on to work for Reprieve, a human rights NGO, conducting death penalty casework in South East Asia and the USA, before joining SCOMO's prison law team.
